GIFT IDEAS FOR THE OUTDOORS-PERSON
By Bob Jensen

We have entered that time of year when some folks experience a little more tension than necessary. The reason for the tension is gift shopping. It seems like more and more we put increased emphasis on gifts and less on fellowship, glad-tidings, peace-on- earth and all that stuff. Nonetheless, that’s what some folks deal with this time of year. The mission of the following is to reduce tension for anyone gift-shopping for an angler or outdoors-person.

It seems like anglers are always wanting another “fishin’ pole”. If you want your angler to have perhaps the best rod available, check out a Series One rod from Berkley. Longer rods are the trend right now; for a walleye angler a 6’6” medium action spinning rod will always be welcomed. They’re great for jigging or live-bait rigging, and those are techniques that most Midwest anglers employ for walleyes.

I’ll bet your angler doesn’t have a landing net with the new Pow’R Lok system. That’s because they’re brand new for this year. However, once they see one, they will want one. This net is easier to use than any net out there. The Pow’R Lok system is available on Power Catch nets from Frabill.

Many anglers don’t get real excited about ties or shirts, but show them some long underwear that will wick moisture away, then you’ve got their attention. That’s what Cabela’s Polartec garments do. They come in different weights for different uses. A set of Cabela’s Guidewear would be appreciated by any outdoors-person who wants to be protected from rain or spray.

Most ice anglers have a sonar for ice-fishing, but many don’t have a hand-held sonar that enables an angler to check water depth without drilling holes. The MarCum LX-i reads through the ice so you know if you’re in the area you want to be before you start drilling. Many ice-anglers, once they use this unit, don’t want to fish without it.

A gift certificate to a place that sells outdoor stuff is always the right size and color. Be sure to go the gift certificate route and not cash. That way you can be sure that it will be used on essential items like lures, line, and reels and not squandered foolishly on luxuries like insurance and house payments.

Perhaps the nicest gift, and the one that would be most cherished, would be the gift of time. Instead of agonizing over what gift to give your outdoors-person, perhaps some additional time in the boat, on the ice, or just walking through the woods would be a nice thing. I know that little boys and girls remember a bass attacking a topwater bait a lot better than they do a present wrapped in pretty paper. Outdoors-people come in all shapes, sizes, and genders, but a gift of time fits anyone, and anyone would appreciate more time outdoors from someone they enjoy being outdoors with.

Happy Holidays!
